SONG LYRICS

"Got My Soul" is my first song to be licensed for use elsewhere. This song used to be titled "Music" but I changed it to some lyrics from the chorus. It's a plea to follow my muse of music and continue to stay true to myself, to never lose my soul to anything, even if it means poverty.

CAROLINA SATURDAY NIGHT marks the second time I've awakened with a song or part of a song in my head. The other one turned out to be a bluegrass tune, "MY FADED HEART"- below, and on my first album. This one is better. It's my first PG RATED song ever, but with this chorus I had to write verses that "matched" it to be logical, to make sense. I'm getting lots of positive feedback on this one. And sure enough, it's got a banjo on it.

CAROLINA SATURDAY NIGHT 8-15-14

THIS WEEK IS DONE,                                 AND SO AM I
IT’S TIME FOR SOME FUN,        NOT SIT AROUND AND SIGH.
MONEY IS TIGHT,                   BUT WHO NEEDS IT A- ALL?
I’VE GOT YOU, BA-BY,              WE’LL HAVE US A BALL!
CHORUS:
I’LL TAKE YOU ON A SATURDAY NIGHT
WHEN THE MOON IS GLOWIN’   -
THE STARS BURNIN’ BRIGHT
WE’LL DO IT      -AND WE’LL DO IT AGAIN
DO IT AS LOVERS,     -AND WE’LL DO IT AS FRIENDS
YOU’LL TAKE ME WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT
ON A CAROLINA SATURDAY NIGHT
ON A CAROLINA SATURDAY NIGHT

BRIDGE:
I’M LOVING YOU
YOU’RE LOVING ME
 WE’LL MAKE IT THROUGH
‘CAUSE WE KNOW LOVE IS THE KEY.
REFRAIN:
LOVE IS THE KEY - LOVE IS THE KEY

LET’S HAVE A DRINK,          MAKE OUR OWN FUN
SIT HERE WITH ME         THIS PARTY HAS JUST BEGUN
GIVE ME YOUR WARMTH   AND I’LL GIVE YOU MI- INE
WE’LL GET TOGETHER       WE’LL DO MORE THAN DINE

CHORUS w/o bridge
REPEAT LAST LINE 3 TIMES AND END.

"Brices Creek Blues" uses our current locale near New Bern, NC,  as its setting, to contrast its beauty with despair.  (Written during a bout of the flu!)

THEY SAY, “WHAT’S UP-  HAS GOTTA COME DOWN.
THEY SAY, “WHAT’S UP-  HAS GOTTA COME DOWN.”
I HOPE WHAT’S DOWN-   WILL RISE UP AND REBOUND.
CHORUS

NOW I'M SO LONELY-    WISH MY BABY HAD STAYED.
CHORUS
REPEAT VERSE 1 - END

"My Faded Heart" is most unusual because I abruptly awoke early one morning with the bluegrass melody pounding through my head and the title fully intact. So I got up and quicky sketched it out on paper and went back to sleep. It's rare, but it happens. I can't explain it. Since I had the title, I wrote the lyrics to logically "match it" later.

"Actual Factual Fact" (started 2001) is a collection of my ideas regarding finding that "someone special" in contemporary times. It's now almost as if folks are afraid to speak to strangers, thus making them acquaintenances, and perchance lovers later. It's become "cool" to act as if you don't care whether you get to know someone better.

"Been So Long" isn't very autobiographical, but is a kind of fantasy I had that day back in 2006.

BEEN SO LONG-BY MIKE UPCHURCH (10-24-06)

Chorus:
BEEN SO LONG SINCE I MET YOU
I CONFUSED YOU WITH SOMEONE ELSE
BEEN SO LONG SINCE I GET YOU
I FORGOT THE TRUTH THAT TIME WILL TELL
BEEN SO LONG SINCE I LEFT YOU
I CONFUSED YOU WITH SOMEONE KIND
BEEN SO LONG I FORGET YOU
ALMOST DROVE ME OUT OF MY MIND

Verse 1:
I LOOKED AT YOU WITH THAT BLANK LOOK ON YOUR FACE
I'D NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE
THEN MEMORIES CAME FLOODIN' BACK ON ME
I PICKED YOUR CHIN UP OFF THE FLOOR
I TOOK YOUR TIME AND I LED YOU OUT THAT DOOR
WE TALKED AWHILE AND THEN YOU CRIED
MY HURTIN' HEART HAD HEARD IT ALL BEFORE
EXCUSES FOR THE WAY YOU LIED
(Repeat Chorus)
Verse 2:
MY HEARTS GOT SCARS THAT CALLUSES CAN'T COMPARE
IT WONT HURT LIKE THAT AGAIN
I'LL FIND MY WAY OUT
(AND) FIND MY WAY BACK IN
BUT YOU WON'T EVER BE MY FRIEND
1 - 2 - 3, MAN, IM GLAD IM FREE
4 - 5 - 6, NO MORE DIRTY TRICKS
7 - 8 - 9, WELL, I'M FEELIN' FINE
NOW THAT IM AT 10, I WON'T DO IT AGAIN!

I wrote "Melting" in 1999 while sitting in a dark dorm room at Longwood College (before the big fire there), taking classes for teacher recertification far from home.

MELTING- by Mike Upchurch (7-21-99)
IT'S ONLY BEEN TWO DAYS
SINCE I LEFT YOU A-LONE
YET I'M WEARY, BABE, AN' WORN,
SEARCH FOR A NEW HOME
I JUST DON'T TRUST MYSELF
TO ALWAYS DO WHAT IS RIGHT.

BUT MELTING, OH THIS SLOWLY
MAKES ME MIS- UN- DER- STOOD

CHORUS

IT'S UP TO YOU. ITS UP TO ME.

I'M TOUGH AS AN ICECUBE,
SO SLIPPERY THEY MAY SAY
BUT THIS CUBE HAS ITS CORNERS;
THEYRE JUST MELTING AWAY
TIME MAKES ITS MARK SO SLOWLY,
SOMETHING YOU'VE GOT TO EARN.
SOMETIMES YOU JUST CAN'T RUSH IT,
LIFE TAKES A WHILE TO LEARN

BUT MAYBE YOU'LL STICK WITH ME
YOULL SEE THOSE EDGES MELT
YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU PLAYED THE GAME OUT
AND KEPT THE CARDS YOU DELT

"Try," written in 2005, is a song about how EFFORT is part of the recipe for success and happiness, no matter how bleak the present.

TRY -By Mike Upchurch 1/18/05
Life is short- and then you die.
Stick a needle- in your eye.
Break your heart- and wonder why,
Have a love- then kiss it bye.
Chorus:
But you try -
and wonder why
Until you die-
but you try, try, try. •

You're a kid- but soon you're old.
It's tropical- and then its cold.
Youve got a grip- but lose your hold.
So together- watch it unfold.
Chorus

Youve made some bucks- and now you're broke.
You had it made- and then you spoke.
Get damn good- and still you choke.
You're sincere- then you're a joke!
Chorus and Bridge:
Ya, you try, try, try!
Gotta try, try, try!
Still you try, try, try!
(solo)

Once you were strong- now you are weak.
You smelled so nice- and now you reek!
So confident- Then you're so meek
You saw it fine- yet now you seek.
Chorus

Party on- and then its gone.
Magic until- you lost your wand!
Got the glue- but not the bond.
Life makes sense- and then its non-

"Ol' Rocker" was probably written over 20 years ago, and as such should be retitled "Really Ol' Rocker." It is based on a true story: A fiddle playing friend, Jerry Correll, asked me back around 1984 if I wanted to still be playing rock and roll when I got older. It was a good question and made me think. Rock still gets my toe-a-tappin', but as I age I will probably slide into a more "lyric friendly" style of performance. Thanks, Jerry, for making me think about it and write this answer.

OL ROCKER-By Mike Upchurch (circa 1983)

A FIDDLE PLAYIN' FRIEND THAT I ONCE KNEW
HE SAID, I GOT SOMETHIN TO SAY TO YOU:
DO YOU WANT TO PLAY THAT ROCK AND ROLL
WHEN YOU'RE SETTLED DOWN AN YER GETTING OLD?
WHAT HE SAID, IT SORTA STUCK WITH ME
WOULD I ROCK AND ROLL WHEN I WAS SIXTY-THREE?
WELL, LET ME TELL YA, IT SURE FEELS FINE
SO ILL PROBABLY ROCK UNTIL I'M EIGHTY-NINE!

CHORUS:
YA, ILL ROCK AS LONG AS I CAN
GUESS ILL ROCK UNTIL I'M AN OLD MAN
I'M A BACK BEAT GUITAR GROOVIN' FAN
GUESS I'LL BE AN OLD ROCKER

WELL BE ROCKIN IN A RESTLESS HOME
BANG BASS ON A BED MADE OF CHROME
USE A BED PAN FOR A SNARE
CLICKIN' LOWER TEETH BLUES
FROM A WHEELCHAIR
(CHORUS)

Our nation is polarized in its politics so badly right now that I've seen several people hurt by it, good people who simply have learned the hard way to avoid bring up the topic of politics, even with friends. Our House and Senate are exacerbating this problem through filibusters that don't end, etc. The time is ripe for this song, "A House Divided,"about two brothers who can not move forward with their lives because they simply can not compromise, and thus perish. I should point out the finger squeaks on the strings are because this song has only ONE chord shape- a B7- that is moved up and down the neck while being fingerpicked.

A HOUSE DIVIDEDBY MIKE UPCHURCH 10-25-11

A DADDY AND TWO SONS, LIVIN' OFF THE LAND
DIDN'T HAVE MUCH, AND THEY DIDN'T LIVE GRAND.
HAD ONLY ONE MULE TO PULL THE PLOW,
THEY HAD NO MOMMA,AND THEY HAD NO COW.
THEN ONE DAY THEIR DADDY DID DIE.
AND THOSE TWO BROTHERS SAT DOWN AND CRIED. X2

DADDY'S WILL, IT DIVIDED THEIR LAND.
EACH GOT HALF TO DO WHAT HE CAN.
ONE GOT THE MULE, THE OTHER THAT PLOW.
BUT WHAT ONE WANTED THE OTHER WOULDN'T ALLOW.
COULDN'T USE THE MULE WITHOUT THE PLOW,
SO THE LAND WENT FALLOW WITH A FURROWED BROW. X2

THOSE TWO BROTHERS IN THE SAME HOME,
BOTH TOGETHER, YET SO ALL ALONE.
THEY COULDN'T AGREE OR COMPROMISE.
THOUGHT IT WOULDN'T BE PRUDENT, IT WOULDN'T BE WISE.
SO THEY STAYED THERE ALL THEIR YEARS,
PLAYING OFF ONE ANOTHER'S FEARS. X2

LINCOLN SAID IT BEST IN ALL THIS LAND:
A HOUSE DIVIDED- IT CAN NOT STAND.
WITHOUT THE CROPS TO PAY THEIR BILLS
THE BROTHERS FELL HUNGRY; THEY BOTH FELL ILL.
BOTH BROTHERS DIED, THOUGHT THE OTHER WAS WRONG,
LIKE POLITICIANS WHO CAN'T GET ALONG. X3•

"Waitin'On You "- 6/12/11: I had just finished teaching Stevie Nick's "Landslide" to my guitar students and came up with the finger picking pattern for this song just to teach them that there are millions of finger picking patterns, not just one. They could just make up their own pattern like I had done.Later I kept trying to write lyrics for it and found myself using this first line repeatedly. I thought it sounded familiar, so I looked through my old songs and found it, four verses I had written to a song back in 2005 called "Get Real." Since the MELODY wasn't that good, but the verses were fine, I recycled them into "Waitin' On You." Then I wrote the chorus and bridge for it. Done! It's Deb's new favorite.

WAITING ON YOU - BY MIKE UPCHURCH
1.) I DONT KNOW YOU- YOU DONT KNOW ME
HOW WE GOT HERE- I JUST CAN'T SEE
TRY TO KNOW YOU-GET A GOOD START
YOU WON'T LET ME- INTO YOUR HEART
CHORUS:
YOU WONT CATCH ME WAITIN' ON YOU
YOU WON'T CATCH ME WAITIN' ON YOU
YOU WON'T CATCH ME WAITIN' ON YOU
TO GROW OLD-TO GROW OLD.

2.) YOU DONT KNOW ME- I DONT KNOW YOU
SUPERFICIAL- WHAT WE GONNA DO?
LOTS ARE LIKE YOU- IT'S EASY TO SEE.
I AIN'T LIKE THAT- IT JUST ISN'T ME.
CHORUS- then BRIDGE:
I'VE BEEN DOWN THIS ROAD BEFORE
TRIED TO COME IN AND YOU-
SHUT THE DOOR
NOW IT'S YOUR TURN FOR STANDIN' OUTSIDE
I'M NOT TAKIN' YOU ...ALONG FOR THE RIDE!

3.) IVE GOT QUESTIONS -I GOT TO ASK:
WHY YOU WEAR- THAT DECEIVING MASK?
WHO YOU FOOLIN? YOU AIN'T FOOLIN ME!
THE REAL YOU- WHAT I WANNA SEE.
CHORUS

4.) LIVE A BIG LIE- FOR LONG ENOUGH
YOU BELIEVE IT ...REALITY'S TOUGH!
SOME WILL HURT YOU- THE STORIES THEY TELL!
CHOOSE YOUR FRIENDS WELL-THE REST ROT IN HELL!
CHORUS-CHORUS-END •

"Cut Me Loose" is a rocker in the vein of J.J. Cale's style.
One of my stronger rhythm tunes.

CUT ME LOOSE- BY MIKE UPCHURCH 5-16-11

YOU CAN SEE ME- BY MY SELF
YOU CAN PUT ME- ON A SHELF
IF IM NOT WITH YOU, I'M WITH SOMEBODY ELSE.
YOU CAN CUT ME- WITH A KNIFE
YOU CAN END IT- OR BE BY MY SIDE
THAT'S THE HAND YOU PLAY -THE CARDS YOU WERE DELT.

CHORUS:
CUT ME LOOSE AND PASS THE WINE
YOU KNOW ME, BABY, AND I'LL BE FINE.
CUT ME LOOSE AND DONT BE KIND
LOTS A GRAPES HANGIN' ON THE VINE.

IT ONLY HURTS FOR A LITTLE WHILE
SNAP THAT BANDAGE IF IT MAKES YOU SMILE!
DO IT QUICK, NOW, AND DON'T BE VILE
CUT ME LOO-OOOSE, CUT ME LOOSE!
SOLO- CHORUS/BRIDGE

COME ON, BABY- GIMME A GRIN
!IT AIN'T THIS EASY- WITH MOST OTHER MEN.
I CAN TAKE IT - I'M NOT MADE OUT OF GLASS.
COME ON, HONEY- MAKE UP YOUR MIND
CUT ME QUICK- DON'T JUST GIMME A SIGN
DO WHAT YOU GOT TO, BUT DO IT WITH CLASS.
CHORUS/BRIDGE- END.•

I wrote "Everyone Is Weird" simply because I believe it to be true. We're all a little weird, some more than others. We tend to draw a line between acceptable and unacceptable weirdness, though. It started as a jam session with my son, M.J., playing drums. I added the lyrics later. I admit I borrowed from the old Quaker saying "Everyone is queer, excepting me and thee. And sometimes I wonder about thee!" For some reason, I seem to get a nice audience response to this song.

EVERYONE IS WEIRD-by Mike Upchurch 2/25/05

EVERYONE IS WEIRD
INCLUDING ALL YOU HERE
SURE, SOME ARE MORE DEAR
AND A LOT ARE MORE GEARED
BUT EVERYONE IS WEIRD
THATS THE WAY IT APPEARS
THATS EVERYONE- EXCEPTING YOU AND ME!

EVERYONE IS WEIRD
DEPENDING HOW THEY'RE REARED
SOME JUST DON'T GET STEERED
SOME FROM THE PATH HAVE VEERED!
BUT EVERYONE IS WEIRD
HEIRARCHY WITH ONE TIER!
THAT'S EVERYONE - EXCEPTING YOU AND ME!
SOLO

EVERYONE IS WEIRD
SOME ARE VERY NEAR
SOME ARE FULL OF FEAR
SOME JUST LOOK AND LEAR
SOME STARE INTO THEIR BEER
BUT EVERYONE IS WEIRD
THAT'S EVERYONE - EXCEPTING YOU AND ME
THAT'S EVERYONE - EXCEPTING YOU AND ME-
THAT'S EVERYONE - EXCEPTING YOU AND ME!
and sometimes I wonder about you !! • (weirdo!)

"Hard Times" was written because we were experiencing them, like most of the country during The Great Recession.

HARD TIMES -BY MIKE UPCHURCH 2-25-09

THE DAY WAS DOWN TO DARK-THIRTY,
I DECIDED TO TAKE ME A STROLL.
HEADED FOR THE KORNER KUBBOARD,
GET A COKE AND A HONEY BUN ROLL.
ROUNDED THE CORNER OF THIRD AND MAIN,
AND I COULDNT BELIEVE MY EYES:
THE KUBBOARD WAS BARE,
NO LIGHTS ANYWHERE,
NO HONEY BUN ROLLS, AN' MOON PIES.

PRECHORUS:
IN HARD TIMES-
HARD TIMES-
DOWN IN HARD TIMES

THE FOR SALE SIGN ON THE WINDOW
SAID "FORECLOSURE" IN ARIAL BOLD.
JOBS ARE RARE, YA BETTER BEWARE,
OR BE LEFT OUT IN THE COLD!

CHORUS:
WELL- YOU CAN'T GET OUT IN HARD TIMES,
NO NIGHTS OUT ON THE TOWN.
STAY HOME, COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
WHEN HARD TIMES GET YOU DOWN.
GET YA DOWN-
BRING YA DOWN- AN'
KEEP YOU DOWN

TIMES ARE TIGHT AS A PARKIN' SPACE,
CARS PARKED OVER BOTH LINES.
YOU MIGHT GET IN WITH A CURSE AND A GRIN,
BUT YA CAN'T GET OUT IN HARD TIMES!
Repeat PRE-CHORUS
HAWAII- IT'S OUT OF THE QUESTION.
CAR REPAIRS AND GRAND-AY LATTES.
THAT DOOR - IT JUST WON'T OPEN,
MY SOULS- FOR SALE ON eBAY.
Repeat PRE-CHORUS- then CHORUS

CARS PARKED TIGHT AGAINST YOU,
YOUR DOORS WON'T OPEN BUT SO.
HARD TIMES KEEP US HOME ON THE INSIDE,
HARD TIMES KEEP US FEEIN' SO LOW

Repeat PRE-CHORUS
then CHORUS, END. •

"Hold On Tight" is not truly autobiographical- (all songs are partly autobiographical), but came about via a nice guitar groove that just needed lyrics.

HOLD ON TIGHT 12-05-08 BY MIKE UPCHURCH

YOUVE CHANGED- LIKE THE WEATHER OUTSIDE
YOUVE CHANGED- YOUR LOVE DEEP INSIDE
YOUVE CHANGED- AND I JUST DONT KNOW WHY
YOUVE CHANGED- AND ITS KILLIN ME TONIGHT

CHORUS
DONT WANT TO LOSE YOU- OR CONFUSE YOU
CANT SEEM TO GET IT RIGHT
DONT WANNA BLAME YOU- OR EXPLAIN YOU
JUST WANNA HOLD ON TIGHT

I SEE- HOW YOU SOMETIMES LOOK AWAY
I SEE- HOW YOU CHANGE FROM DAY TO DAY
I SEE- THAT YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO STAY
I SEE- THAT YOU DONT KNOW WHAT TO SAY
CHORUS
SOLO/BREAK

I KNOW- WHAT YOUR LOVE, IT MEANS TO ME
I KNOW- IT COULD LIVE E-TER-NAL-LY
I KNOW- DEEP INSIDE YOU HOLD THE KEY
I KNOW- SO GUESS ILL JUST LET IT BE
CHORUS -CHORUS - END  •

"Just Another Day" is a plea to get people to try and have their lives mean more through more thoughtful, careful choices. In my opinion it's one of my better lyrics.

JUST ANOTHER DAY BY MIKE UPCHURCH 10-5-04

THERE'S NOTHING THAT COMPARES,
NOTHING'S QUITE THE SAME.
UP, DOWN, EVERYWHERE,
EVERYONE'S JUST PLAYIN A GAME

THERE'S SOMETHING I CAN SWEAR,
SOMETHING THAT I BLAME:
UP , DOWN. EVERYWHERE
I CAN SEE THE PAIN.
CHORUS:
LIVIN WITH NO REASON,
LIVIN WITH NO RHYME,
DYIN' WITH NO PURPOSE IN MIND.

DRIFTIN' THROUGH THE SEASONS,
JUST STANDIN IN LINES,
IF THEY DONT LOOK
THEYLL NEVER FIND
ANOTHER WAY.
IT'S JUST ANOTHER DAY.
UP TOWN, DOWN AROUND
EVERYONE'S JUST LOOKIN' FOR THEIR PAY.
FIND SOMETHING THAT YOU LOVE.
FIND SOMETHING YOU CAN PLAY.
LOUD, SOFT, YOU BE THE BOSS,
FIND SOMETHIN SWEET THAT MAKES YOU STAY.

NOT JUST ANOTHER DAY;
FIND ANOTHER WAY.
NEAR, FAR, DONT GO FOR PAR-
WHATEVER WILL IS WHAT YOU MAY!

YOU CAN'T DELAY.
GO MAKE SOME HAY.
RICH, POOR, OPEN THAT DOOR-
THE STATUS QUO HAS GOT TO STRAY!
CHORUS - END •

I was inspired after reading Jimmy Buffet's novel, A PIRATE LOOKS AT FIFTY, and wrote this.
"Row Me Away" tells the story about a lone sailor pulling into a harbor at dusk, setting anchor, and then hearing the locals start their evening parties, with music that draws him, compels him to participate. Then he meets someone special....

ROW ME AWAY By Mike Upchurch 7-11-09•    (Upon completing Jimmy Buffett's novel  A Pirate Looks at Fifty)

Silently slip in the harbor.
Drop anchor and tie it all down.
I've said my good-byes -
Now I watch the moon rise.
Lights sprinkled over the town.

I listen to my heart beat.
Distant music begins to play.
Drums drive the beat -
I swear I hear feet
Happy for the end of the day. •

BRIDGE:
We travel alone
on life's little trip;
What we need is
com-pan-ion-ship. •

CHORUS:
Know who you are
at the end of the day.
Row me afar-
Ya, row me away.
So who you are
makes me want to stay.
Row me afar-
ya, row - me away.

Down to the dinghy I climb.
Row to the music I hear.
I can't stay away-
Out on that bay,
When I can be part of that cheer.

Trade breezes don't cool you-
In a place thats ,
oh, this hot!
The women are sweet -
Boat drinks are a treat.
A good time, and I've had a lot.
BRIDGE/ CHORUS

Music right for the moment.
A joy washed through me that night.
That vibe filled me up -
To the rim of my cup,
As I saw her- in candlelight.

She said she too was lonely.
Took me to her humble home.
The love that we made -
I hope it won't fade,
And I'll never feel alone.
BRIDGE/ CHORUS •

I wrote "Lovin' Again" during the most depressed time of my life, during my divorce when I thought I could lose my kids. So the song is all about sadness, naturally. What surprises some folks is that it's a country tune. I usually write what is inside me, and in this case it's country. Country happens! I've written a handful of country songs.

Lovin' Again- by Mike Upchurch (1982)

Forgivin' Father -
I've been had it looks again
I banked ten years in a relationship -
Oh, what a sin!
I count my blessings and weep.
I count my children she'll keep
Me from seein' again-

Chorus
Again and again and again
and again and again and again.

Tavern keeper,
give me one and one for my friend.
I'll drink to her health,
though she isn't here,
I can still pretend
The cost of love isn't cheap,
But the loss of love just may keep
Me from lovin' again.
(repeat chorus)

Heart full of anger
can keep you from trustin,'My friend.
Keep you from livin'
and keep you from lovin'
Again and again and again and again.
Lady Luck will you please send me
A lovely lady whose heart won't depend on me
Lovin' again.
(repeat chorus)  •    "

To Be Done" came out of a jam session, just some chords that were screaming for some lyrics. The message is a simple one: life is mostly about work, not play. I love playing this one.

To Be Done by Mike Upchurch 10-04

Chorus
Life's a tale to be spun,
Dreamin' dreams on the run,
People places and fun.
There's much work to be done-
to be done, ya-to be done, to be done.

I don't want to work all day
I just wanna go out and play.
Life's too short for workin' so hard.
Lie around and play me some cards
But Momma say...
(repeat chorus)

Lay around, swattin' at flies.
Makin' up jokes and tellin' lies.
Don't wanna work, the sun is too hot!
There go the "Haves"- I'm a "Have Not!"
AND Momma say...
(repeat chorus)

Look here, Momma, I got me a job!
Won't hear me whine and you won't hear me sob.
Work the daytime- playin' at night.
Too much playin' just don't feel right!
And Momma say...
(repeat chorus)•

"Trouble (Just Finds Its Own Way)" is another country song that just happened. It tells us that no matter what we do, trouble enters our lives; it's just a part of life- the Yen/Yang so to speak.

Trouble (Just Finds Its Own Way)by Mike Upchurch (9-12-04)

I've seen rich and I've seen poor,
I've seen love walk out that door.
It don't take a brain to see
How trouble comes to you and me.

Chorus
We don't have to hunt it!
If a baseball, we would bunt it (- or a football, we would punt it)
We love, we laugh, we bicker,
But nothing seems to trick 'er,
And Trouble
just finds
its own way.

You know we get along just fine
Ninty-nine percent of the time.
That one percent that we do fight
Is hurtin' everything so right.
(repeat chorus)

Hurts me so to see you sad;
Makes me wonder if I'm mad- (mad means "insane" here)
Why'd I say what's on my mind
If sayin' it was so unkind?
(repeat chorus)

Like a coin that has two sides,
Love rushed in - out with the tides.
Trouble came, as trouble will.
Took you away; I'm troubled still.
(repeat chorus)•

I simply don't have a more self-explanatory song than "I Need You":•

I NEED YOU - BY MIKE UPCHURCH (circa 2001)
 I NEED YOU
LIKE YOU NEED ME
TOGETHER WE WILL FIND OUR WAY
OUR WAY ONTO THE SEA
I NEED YOU
LIKE YOU NEED ME
LIKE A PAIR OF WELL WORN JEANS
COMFORT IS THE KEY

CHORUS
WE WILL FIND A BETTER WAY
MAKIN MERRY BY THE BA-AY
THROUGH THE YEARS
WE WILL STA----AY -AY

I NEED YOU LIKE YOU NEED ME
WE'LL JUST DO OUR THING
UNTIL ETERNITY
I NEED YOU
LIKE YOU NEED ME
LIFE'S WORTH LIVIN'
WHEN YOURE GIVIN'
YOUR HEART AWAY FOR FREE
CHORUS-
THEN SOLO

I NEED YOU
LIKE YOU NEED ME
WE WONT BREAK IT
IF WE MAKE IT
TOGETHER, YOU AND ME
I NEED YOU
LIKE YOU NEED ME
FRIENDS MAKE LOVERS LIKE NO OTHERS
LAUGHTER IS THE KEY

Patience may be a virtue- BUT life is simply too short to waste a whole lot of time.
(Errily, strangely, "Dan" in the lyrics below called MINUTES after I had written the verse about him!)

TIME CAN'T WAIT By Mike Upchurch 4-24-12
DAN DESIGNS THOSE BUSINESS CARDS
With his Masters Degree in ART.
WITH KIDS IN SCHOOL HE MAKES HIMSELF-
but with a HEAVY HEART.
SAYS HE HAS A PLAN - JUST DOIN' WHAT HE CAN
TO FIND A NEW CAREER -
SOMETHING TO BRING HIM SOME CHEER.

JAY SETS UP THE CHAIRS IN ROWS,
THEY ALL LOOK THE SAME.
HIS DEGREE THAT GOT HIM THERE
IS NOT THE ONE TO BLAME.
HE DUG THIS HOLE HIMSELF,
PUT HIS DREAMS ON A SHELF
WAITED FOR A BETTER DAY,
15 YEARS HE PISSED AWAY.
CHORUS
GOOD IS SOMETIMES GOOD ENOUGH.
WHEN ITS NOT, WELL,
LIFE CAN BE TOUGH.
LIFE'S TOO SHORT
FOR STAYIN' DOWN, DOWN.
TIME CANT WAIT - TO BE FOUND!

DONNA DID WHAT DREAMERS DO,
AND LIVED HER LIFE SO WELL.
PARTIED HARD AND WENT TO WORK.
NOW IT'S GETTING HARD TO SELL.
OLD IS HOW YOU FEEL,
BUT RETAIL- NEVER GOT REAL.
TOO OLD TO BE GIVEN A CHANCE,
JUDGED HARD BY ONLY A GLANCE

GRACE STAYED HOME WITH HER 2 KIDS;
KEPT 'EM SNUG AND WARM
HUBBY BROUGHT THE BACON HOME,
like he's done since they were born.
BUT LIFE SOON PASSED HER BY;
SHE HADN'T EVEN TRIED.
NOW BOTH THOSE KIDS HAVE GROWN;
SHE SITS HOME ALL ALONE.
CHORUS-
